The Artist
Shan Mengbo, born in Jinan, Shandong province in 1949, is an engraving
ceramic artist and the associate director of Shandong Society for Carved Ceramic
Art. He is always delighted in his three hobbies of carved ceramics, egg sculpture
and photograph.
In childhood, he was infatuated with the drawing and carving, which laid a solid
foundation for his later carved ceramic work. Since 1992, he has devoted himself
to carved ceramic art. Based on the assiduously study of more than ten years, he
takes the initiative on traditional Chinese carved ceramic art, and relying on the
artistic attainments of drawing and photograph, he makes the integration of drawing,
photograph and carving to create an unique style of carved ceramic art.
The characteristics of carved ceramic works made by Shan Mengbo are as follows:
with the comprehensive use of various knife skills such as dotting, rotating, ejecting,
picking and cracking, carving the figures of personage, landscape, flower-and-bird
and so on on the ceramic tray which is rigid, glazed, easily cracking and has a
remarkable contrast in white and black; emphasizing Goldstone interest of chisel
and non-coloring; revealing different art images by active use of knife merit and
knife skill.
Shan Mengbo is good at engraving the portrait on the black tray, which can express
the artistic effect of light and shade in low key black and white portrait photography
because of a striking contrast between the black glaze on the surface of black tray
and the porcelain body under the black glaze. He can drive various kids of knife
skills to remove the black glaze layer by layer, which makes the white body exposed
completely in high light zone and gray tone displayed by retaining the black glaze
with different thicknesses. His portrait works does not need any pigment coloration
and the figure images are lifelike with a strong sense of reality and a stereoscopic
effect, which produce a strong visual impact on people.
Shan Mengbo's egg sculptures are praisable too. The carved ceramic is the thrash
of the burin on hard porcelain tray, while egg sculpture is achieved on like paper-thin
chicken eggshell with a light and shade in the lifelike portrait unexpectedly depends
on a thin red skin on the surface of chicken eggshell. It is impossible to perfectly
combine the soft and hard, two kinds of extremely different artistic forms in a
short time. Now, Shan Mengbo has completed a series of egg sculptures, such as Chinese
and foreign celebrities, Chinese ten generalissimos and ten generals, NBA star,
all past presidents of USA, all past Oscar Best Actors.

Mengbo as the precious gifts to Chinese and foreign friends, such as Jin Yuxi, Zheng
