Shan Mengbo

The Artist

Shan Mengbo,born in Jinan, Shandong province in 1949, is an engraving ceramic artist and the associate director of Shandong Society for Carved Ceramic Art. He is always delighted in his three hobbies of carved ceramics, egg sculpture and photograph.


In childhood, he was infatuated with the drawing and carving, which laid a solid foundation for his later carved ceramic work. Since 1992, he has devoted himself to carved ceramic art. Based on the assiduously study of more than ten years, he takes the initiative on traditional Chinese carved ceramic art, and relying on the artistic attainments of drawing and photograph, he makes the integration of drawing, photograph and carving to create an unique style of carved ceramic art.
The characteristics of carved ceramic works made by Shan Mengbo are as follows: with the comprehensive use of various knife skills such as dotting, rotating, ejecting, picking and cracking, carving the figures of personage, landscape, flower-and-bird and so on on the ceramic tray which is rigid, glazed, easily cracking and has a remarkable contrast in white and black; emphasizing Goldstone interest of chisel and non-coloring; revealing different art images by active use of knife merit and knife skill.
Shan Mengbo is good at engraving the portrait on the black tray, which can express the artistic effect of light and shade in low key black and white portrait photography because of a striking contrast between the black glaze on the surface of black tray and the porcelain body under the black glaze. He can drive various kids of knife skills to remove the black glaze layer by layer, which makes the white body exposed completely in high light zone and gray tone displayed by retaining the black glaze with different thicknesses. His portrait works does not need any pigment coloration and the figure images are lifelike with a strong sense of reality and a stereoscopic effect, which produce a strong visual impact on people.
Shan Mengbo's egg sculptures are praisable too. The carved ceramic is the thrash of the burin on hard porcelain tray, while egg sculpture is achieved on like paper-thin chicken eggshell with a light and shade in the lifelike portrait unexpectedly depends on a thin red skin on the surface of chicken eggshell. It is impossible to perfectly combine the soft and hard, two kinds of extremely different artistic forms in a short time. Now, Shan Mengbo has completed a series of egg sculptures, such as Chinese and foreign celebrities, Chinese ten generalissimos and ten generals, NBA star, all past presidents of USA, all past Oscar Best Actors.
Some provincial and municipal leaders frequently take the artistic works of Shan Mengbo as the precious gifts to Chinese and foreign friends, such as Jin Yuxi, Zheng Xiaoying, Solbodan Santrac, Ding Zhangzhong, Yang Zhenning and so on. Shan Mengbo attended various kinds of domestics art fairs and won the gold medal many times. His art works were give the extremely high appraisal. About Carved Porcelain

About Egg Carving

In Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties in China, people had the custom of presenting red eggs as a gift on weddings, birthday parties and child birth celebrations. At that time it prevailed even more in Beijing area with a considerable amount of egg consumption. Thus some people worked on the business of dyed red egg which is called the "color egg". Later, traders painted patterns on these eggs such as flowers and birds, fishes and insects and facial make-up for better sales. After years of evolution, the egg craft gradually improves. Nowadays, people may hollow the egg and carve exquisite patterns on the shell surface which finally forms a precious art with high appreciation value - egg carving.


Egg carving has a variety of crafts. One kind is to carve such patterns as figures, landscapes, birds and flowers on dark egg shell using burin with the formed patterns similar to the sketch or outline drawing; the other kind is to carve on thick duck or ostrich eggs with the method of bas-relief or hollow-out. The process of removal of egg liquid, disinfection and so on needs to be done after completing the egg carving. Due to fragileness, it is very difficult to carve on avian eggshell; hence egg carving products are not common in market.
